March 9, 2009 (Nashville, TN) – Rave reviews are pouring in for singer Melinda Doolittle, whose debut CD Coming Back To You released last month on Hi Fi Recordings.
Doolittle, a renowned 2007 American Idol finalist known for her humility amidst celebrity and her love for God, delivers a critically acclaimed collection of retro soul, R&B and funk covers and previously unreleased originals on Coming Back To You. Produced by Mike Mangini (Jonas Brothers, Bruce Hornsby, Taylor Dayne), her freshman bow claimed Amazon’s No. 1 Contemporary R&B and No. 2 Soul chart positions its first week of release.
In addition to its availability at mainstream stores, CBA retailers are also shelving Coming Back To You because of the album’s strong spiritual undertones and Doolittle’s successful history within the industry. She has sung backup on Gospel and Christian albums for CeCe Winans, Anointed and the Ragamuffin Band, among others.
Applause from critics include:
“she conjures the vitality of an old-fashioned record date, along the lines of vintage Gladys Knight.”
– New York Times
“Doolittle channels Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin over live-band arrangements that feel fresh-faced and old-school at the same time.”
– Entertainment Weekly
“Like a young Tina Turner, she can go from slinky purr to a mighty, gospel-charged growl on vintage R&B numbers that’ll keep you coming back for more.”
– People
“Nearly two years after establishing herself as arguably the best pure singer American Idol has introduced, the Season 6 contestant finally makes her solo debut, and it's worth the wait….The former background singer should have her Idol fans coming back in droves.” – USA Today
“Smart List: Please resume talking about: Melinda Doolittle: The little girl with the big voice is finally releasing her debut disc, ‘Coming Back To You,’ full of Motown-inspired R&B and jazz pop. You remember her, of course, from ‘American Idol,’ where she was unjustly booted before Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks. It’s time to help her exact revenge.” – LA Times
“Back to You is a solid debut and vindicates the judgment of all the folks — the Idol judges included — who thought Doolittle was robbed of her victory.” – The Tennessean
Currently Doolittle is preparing for the “American Stars in Concert: Spring Break” tour which features a combination of four of the top ten finalists from American Idol’s Seasons 6 and 7. Along with Chikezie (Season 7), Gina Glocksen (Season 6) and Phil Stacey (Season 6), Doolittle will share the stage for an eve of solo, duet and ensemble performances. The Spring Tour launches March 15th in Fort Pierce, FL and will visit 14 cities across the U.S.
